Empty filament holder with spool of filament next to it

Chandlee Taylor

At Make Central, we quickly determined that we needed a holder for our filament spools in order to keep our filament clean and running smoothly. Instead of buying one, coordinator Erica Ervin downloaded a universal filament spool holder designed by CreativeTools and made freely available on Thingiverse.com. The spindle fits the majority of spool sizes, and smoothly rotates on hidden roller wheels. The arm through which the filament is threaded has holes that fit two different filament thicknesses, and even has a pocket for a bit of sponge that lubricates and cleans the filament.

Our Makerbot Replicator 5th generation 3D printer successfully printed all seven parts, which were easily assembled into a functional filament holder. We hope that our success inspires you to think about how you can use 3D printing to make something useful to you!

Tools and Technology Used:

  • Makerbot Replicator 3D printer
  • Makerbot software
  • PLA filament

If you want to design an object for our 3D printers, all you need is a program that will create an .stl file (free programs include Tinkercad.com and Google Sketchup), and we will take care of the rest!
